Studying the great minds of the past and present lead to astounding breakthroughs in the future. The same can be said in an individual’s understanding of him or herself. I am partial to words of wisdom by various members of the science of psychology when it comes to mental health. But there is much to learn and appreciate from authors, political leaders, inventors, celebrities, and many more. In keeping with my usual short but sweet posts I have selected 4 quotes that have resounded with me lately.
I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become ~ Carl Jung, psychologist
Every day both good and bad things happen in our lives that shape our character and influence our preferences. Although they make a significant impact, at the end of the day we make the decision to allow it to define us. The challenge each person faces is to define who they wish to be, and to consistently engage in practices that facilitate that person.
The brain is wider than the sky ~ Emily Dickinson, author
The mind has the ability to place restraints or set a person free. There are no limits to what you are capable of achieving as long as your mindset is firm on the accomplishment of goals. The views of others can deter the mind’s confidence and assurance, but focusing on each step and taking the time to celebrate every milestone will push those naysayers to the back.
I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live up to the light that I have. ~Abraham Lincoln, president
Attempts to meet our goals will result in complications that may curtail the achievement, but knowing you have put forth a great effort, is in itself the greatest reward. The next time you experience disappointment, look back at all you have done and appreciate yourself and all that you learned.
The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind. ~William James, philosopher
Think positively and positive things will happen. Even finding the good in the bad can change your response to the most harrowing situation. I found this way of thinking beneficial when dealing with different personalities. Making a conscious effort to not let the behavior of others influence my response helps me to take well thought out actions.
