Mental Health Awareness: Defining Mental Health

We are coming to the end of Mental Health Awareness month but discussions on the topic cannot stop here. Health in all aspects is a work in progress that requires daily maintenance. One of the most important things to remember is that everyone’s needs are different. We must find and do what works for us. I wanted to sum up the month with defining mental health and sharing ways you can make any necessary adjustments. The World Health Organization defines mental health as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”. Let’s unpack, digest, and make a plan.

Realizing Your Own Abilities

What we are capable of achieving is limitless but does involve making an attempt and in many cases practice. Knowing what we can handle and the best ways to get through moments when our patience is tested is part of maintaining mental health. Keep yourself open to new ways to build on coping skills because as we travel through life we will face new obstacles.

Coping With The Day-To-Day

Stress is a part of life and can be a useful tool when effectively handled. Before engaging in a heated debate, make sure you have fully listened to the other side, and take a deep breath before responding. When your inbox gets flooded with emails or you are tasked with an unrealistic deadline, take a moment to organize your thoughts and make a plan. Learning to tackle one thing at a time makes the overall load less stressful.

Working Productively & Fruitfully

Work to live, instead of living to work. The most happiest of workers are the ones who are well rested, feel they have a purpose, and who make the most of every opportunity. Although many of us have found ourselves at jobs that are less than ideal, we can look to other areas of our lives for fulfillment. For me learning to balance my corporate job, my blog, and my shop has helped me improve on my time management skills and discover new levels of gratitude. Work with purpose and the results are the most rewarding.

Keep The Conversation Going

I cannot stress enough the benefits of talking about mental health. Normalizing conversations will help to eliminate stigmas and biases. Sharing information and experiences with friends and family are a great way to develop coping skills and encourage healthy habits. Interested in learning more ways you can promote mental health, read articles, follow experts on social media, and most importantly make it a topic discussed daily.

Today I am grateful for the many communities I belong to, the opportunities to learn, and the chance to share that knowledge with all of you.
